The first step forward on any journey starts with intention.

The second step of that journey is to book and pay for your ticket.

The third step is to spend some talking to me about your intended health destination.

My aim as a teacher is to set up an ongoing dialogue with you. I will listen while you tell me what you want to achieve but I shall also watch you carefully while you work through your Pilates or your yoga practice.  Weekly I will review how you feel about your progress and your journey based on what you tell me and my observations of you in class.

If you are just getting started on your journey with me towards creating change in your body and mind you have two different paths towards your goals:

- Group Yoga or Mat Pilates classes for your home or workplace

- Private Yoga or Mat Pilates training sessions

General group classes are best for people with little prior experience of Yoga/Pilates. If you have not had prior experience here is what you can expect from your first Yoga/Pilates class:

A Slow Paced but Physically and Mentally Challenging Mind Body Connection Class

Pilates and yoga as physical exercise programs focus on strengthening and lengthening the muscles by moving mindfully and breathing slowly and deliberately using specific directed imagery suggestions. Pilates and yoga classes will be much more slowly paced than a standard gym class and you will receive specific information from me about movement mechanics, anatomy, breathing and spinal alignment during each exercise. You may be very sore for days after your class because you will be moving your body in a way that it is not used to.

Communication

If something feels odd or painful I will expect you to call me over and tell me what you are feeling. Good movement patterns should not hurt contrary to the 'no pain, no gain' philosophies of many other exercise regimes.

Adjustment/Modification

If you have injuries or physical limitations (such as pregnancy, recovery from surgery, diabetes, medication) or you do not want hands on adjustments/physical corrections for any reason please tell me before a group class begins. This will allow me to modify the class structure to either strengthen your injury, balance your physical limitation or use non-physical cues to help you move differently.  Please also let me know if you need to leave early.

Results

Pilates and yoga both tone and strengthen the body as well as providing ease of movement for people who suffer from chronic discomfort caused by lifestyle tension. People usually feel longer, taller and lighter on their feet after yoga and Pilates classes. To see significant changes in the way that you look as well as experiencing an increase in flexibility and strength you should aim to attend at least 2 or 3 Pilates classes a week for a period of at least 12 weeks. Since Pilates is a very effective form of strength training, more than 3 sessions a week is unnecessary (and often counterproductive) for most people. You can, however, attend yoga classes 5 or 6 days a week without adverse effect. You may well will feel significantly increased flexibility and ease of movement after your first yoga class although for many it will take 4 or more classes to notice a big difference.

For quicker results or if you have special needs it is a good idea to consider  a private or semi-private yoga/Pilates classes (2-4 people). For more information about Private Yoga/Pilates classes please contact me
